The sale of a part of the
government's stake in energy giant Enel has begun in a deal
worth about 2.2 billion euros for national coffers, the Treasury
department announced Thursday.
About 540 million ordinary shares were put up for sale on
Wednesday, the equivalent of about 5.74% of the State's stake in
Enel.
The accelerated share sale will reduce its holdings in Enel
to 25.5% from the previous level of 31.24%.
The government has said it intends to sell stakes in
several State-owned enterprises, in a form of partial
privatization.
Enel is a multinational manufacturer and distributor of
energy and gas.
