Italy's Audit Court on Friday
ordered the former president of Sardinia Renato Soru, as well as
several other regional officials, to pay damages after
convicting them of abusing public accounts.
The case involved an attempted rescue using more than
800,000 euros in public money of a company that built water
systems.
The regional government had taken over the company in 2007,
but it was later wound down.
Soru was ordered to pay more than 337,000 euros while other
officials were assessed smaller amounts.
