Mayor Ignazio Marino said
Thursday he will redistribute a total of 7,400 refugees and
asylum seekers in a more equal way among Rome's neighborhoods
and outlying villages.
"Of the total, 500 people were assigned to (the village of)
Corcolle, while other neighborhoods don't have any refugee
reception centers," Marino said.
"I'm thinking of the (wealthy) Parioli neighborhood, for
example".
The mayor said he has requested an overhaul of the refugee
reception and distribution plan.
"We need to find solutions that won't add urban disruption
to the difficulties of those fleeing from war zones," he said.
Authorities are weighing the possibility of offering
citizens 30 euros a day to host or foster a refugee child or
adult, Marino has said.
An estimated 150,000 refugees fleeing wars in Africa and
the Middle East are expected to reach Italy by the end of the
year, according to the interior ministry.
