(ANSA) La Spezia, July 4 - Fugitive Russian magnate Yuriy
Megul was arrested by Italian police on the Ligurian coast
Friday on charges of fraud and tax evasion, ending a five year
hunt by Interpol, police said.
Megul, aged 41, had been managing director of numerous
companies including the Ukrainian energy concern Naftogaz before
he went on the run.
Police arrested the Russian at his hotel in the resort of
Levanto in the tourist-famed Cinque Terre district as he was
about to go to the beach together with an Austrian girlfriend,
police sources said.
Megul was taken to the Villa Andreino prison where he was
being held pending a formal extradition request from Russian
authorities.
