(ANSA) Turin, May 5 - Mayor of Turin Pietro Fassino, a well-known Juventus soccer fan, set off a furore after he gave the finger to a group of Torino supporters Sunday.
Fassino, a former communist and former Italian foreign minister, lost patience after being insulted at length by fans while attending a ceremony at the northern city's Filadelfia stadium recalling the 1949 Superga air disaster in which 31 people died, including almost all of Torino's team of the day.
The mayor's gesture was videoed by a city councillor from the opposition M5S party who put the footage on the Internet.
Fassino said Monday that he regretted the 'up yours' gesture but added that it was intolerable to be threatened gratuitously.
