Finance police said Monday that 517 people have been cited for defrauding state pensions institute INPS to the tune of 16.5 million euros.
The suspects all face charges of continuous fraud against the state and collectivity for failing to comply with norms requiring beneficiaries of the standard old-age pension to be stably resident in Italy. Investigations in 19 regions and 81 provinces showed how the Italian citizens moved abroad after obtaining their pension but continued to have it credited to their bank account or returned to Italy occasionally to collect it over the counter.
