Premier Giorgia Meloni's right-wing
Brothers of Italy (FdI) party on Thursday said it would send its
representatives to TV debates ahead of the European elections
while voicing regret that parties upholding media watchdog AGCOM
equal time rules had torpedoed a face-off between Meloni and the
leader of the biggest opposition party, Elly Schlein of the
centre-left Democratic Party (PD).
"Giorgia Meloni was the first premier who was willing to debate
the main opposition force in view of a major electoral date,"
said FdI's members of the Rai state broadcaster oversight
commission.
"Regrettably, AGCOM took on board the arguments of those who
wanted to prevent this face-off.
"Brothers of Italy takes note of this and confirms its
willingness for debate via its political representatives,
without wasting the premier's time further".
