Chico Forti, an Italian businessman
serving life in the USA for killing an Australian businssman in
1998, is no longer being held in prison in Miami but detained by
the US Immigration Agency, awaiting transfer to Italy, according
to a source close to the 65-year-old from Trentino.
Two or three weeks could be enough for his long-awaited return
for which the government has been working, said the source.
Forti was sentenced to life imprisonment in Florida in 2000 for
the murder of Dale Pike on 15 February 1998.
Other sources closely following the dossier are instead more
cautious, pointing out that the average waiting time for
surrender after the Italian sentence of recognition of the
foreign one, a conversion decided in recent weeks by the Trento
Court of Appeal, is four to five months.
Forti and his supporters have always maintained he is a victim
of a miscarriage of justice.
