Another prison suicide Thursday night
raised the toll of inmates who have taken their own lives in
Italian jails this year to 34.
A young man hanged himself in the medium security prison of
Parma.
It is the second suicide at the jail and the fourth in Emilia
Romagna in the last 12 months, said the regional inmates
ombudsman, Roberto Cavalieri.
Prison unions and political parties have urged action to stem
the wave of jail suicides.
The spate has been linked to bad conditions and chronic
overcrowding in Italy's penitentiaries.
