European heads of states and governments gathered for a two-days European Council meeting on 22 and 23 June mainly focussed 'on the ongoing efforts to strengthen the European Union and protect its citizens through the work on counterterrorism, security and defence, external borders, illegal migration and economic development'. On the meeting's second day the EU leaders were expected 'to reaffirm their commitment to a rules-based multilateral trading system, as well as to free trade and investment', the European Council said in a press release.
