(ANSA) - BELGRADE, APR 26 - The Chernobyl power station
experienced a catastrophic event on April 26, 1986, when the
Unit 4 reactor exploded. The Soviet authorities dispatched
thousands of personnel with inadequate protection to clear the
radioactive debris, resulting in many deaths. This incident is
considered the most significant nuclear accident to date.
