(ANSA) - BOLZANO, FEB 7 - Tyrol goes ahead on the culling of
'problematic' wolves and bears. For the time being, only the
Greens will vote against the reform bill that will be debated
this week by the assembly of the Austrian Land. The new law,
which should come into force as early as April, allows taking
wolves, bears, lynxes, and golden jackals with a simple
ordinance. An ordinance, according to Austrian law can neither
be appealed nor suspended.
In 2022, the Tiroler Tageszeitung reported, the wolf would have
mauled 355 farm animals in Tyrol, causing losses of 235,000
euros. "We cannot stand idly by", commented deputy governor and
agriculture councilor Josef Geisler. Social Democrats of SPOE
and liberals of NEOS have also already announced their vote in
favor. According to Green group leader Gebi Mair, the reform
contradicts European law. WWF is ready to submit an appeal to
the Austrian Supreme Court. (ANSA).
