Slovenian PM denounces suspected abuse of office

(ANSA) - BELGRADE, MAY 17 - Slovenian Prime Minister Robert Golob has strongly condemned the suspected abuse of office by former director of the Office for Money Laundering Prevention, Damjan Zugelj, regarding a major investigation of bank accounts, the Slovenian news agency STA reported.

Golob emphasized that there should be no tolerance for such deplorable abuses in a democratic state governed by the rule of law. If the allegations prove true, this incident would be one of the largest cases of official institution misuse for partisan political motives in the country's history, aimed at influencing election outcomes, Golob noted.

The police and state prosecution are currently investigating whether Zugelj violated the law and misused his office in launching an extensive review of bank accounts in Slovenia, STA informed. Media reports suggested that the investigation was allegedly orchestrated as part of an agreement between former Slovenian Prime Minister Janez Jansa and Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic before the last general election, targeting political opponents and influential figures such as Dragan Solak, the Serbian co-owner of United Group and Telemach telecommunications company.
