Belgrade denounced the 'occupation' of Serb-majority north

(ANSA) - PRISTINA, MAY 19 - Inter-ethnic tension is growing in North Mitrovica -- the sector of Kosovska Mitrovica inhabited by Serb population -- the swearing-in ceremony of the new mayor elected in the April 23 local vote was held today, an election that was boycotted by Serbs and therefore resulted in the election of ethnic Albanian mayors in the four largest Serb-majority municipalities in northern Kosovo. In addition to North Mitrovica, ethnic Albanian mayors were also elected in Zvecan, Zubin Potok and Leposavic. This situation is considered 'unbearable' by the Belgrade leadership, which considers illegitimate the April 23 election, as Albanian mayors representing 2 percent of the local population are called upon to rule communities with a Serb population accounting for 98 percent.
