Detections of migrants in Balkans down in 2023

21% decrease compared to the previous year

(ANSA) - BELGRADE, MAY 15 - The Western Balkan route, a prominent migration route passing through North Macedonia, Serbia, Bosnia and then reaching Hungary, and Croatia, experienced a significant decline in activity during the January-April period, the agency Frontex said today. According to the latest data, over 22,500 detections were recorded in the first four months of 2023, marking a 21% decrease compared to the previous year.

One of the contributing factors to this decline is the alignment of visa policies by countries in the region with the European Union, but also the fact that Hungary has made notable efforts in reinforcing its border control capacity, effectively mitigating irregular movements along the route, Frontex said.
