(ANSA) - TRIESTE, 05 MAR - Violent clashes occurred today
between police and protesters in Athens on the sidelines of a
demonstration after the train disaster in Greece that left 57
people dead. In front of the Parliament, where thousands had
gathered, some demonstrators set fire to garbage cans and threw
Molotov bottles. Police responded with tear gas, stun grenades,
and lightening charges. Police detained five people; seven
policemen were injured as police report accusing those detained
of throwing stones and incendiary bottles at officers.
This morning Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis
apologized to the families of the victims. "As prime minister, I
owe it to everyone, but especially to the relatives of the
victims, to ask for forgiveness," he wrote in a message
addressed to Greeks and posted on his Facebook account. "In the
Greece of 2023, it is not possible for two trains to travel in
opposite directions on the same line and not be noticed by
anyone." (ANSA).
