(ANSA) - BELGRADE, MAY 16 - Albanian Prime Minister Edi
Rama's Socialist Party won a landslide victory in the country's
local elections. Only six small municipalities were taken over
by the center-right opposition, four in the north and two in the
south of the country. In Finiq, near the Greek border, the
candidate of one of the political forces representing the
country's Greek minorities was elected.
The rest of the country, 54 out of 61 municipalities, went to
the Socialists, who managed to seize control of Shkodra, a city
in the country's north and a historic right-wing stronghold, for
the first time.
While approximately 15% of the ballots in Tirana have yet to
be counted, the current Socialist mayor Erion Veliaj is leading
with 54 percent, 20 percentage points ahead of his rival Belind
Kelliçi from the coalition of the Democrats led by former Prime
Minister Sali Berisha and the Party of Freedom led by former
Head of State Ilir Meta. (ANSA).
