(ANSA) - ROME, FEB 2 - Jailed anarchist leader Alfredo Cospito is determined to press on with his hunger strike to get the tough 41 bis regime lifted even if the physical consequences for himself are irreparable, his lawyer said Thursday.
"Alfredo is getting thinner and thinner, he has lost 45 kilos," said his defence attorney, Flavio Rossi Albertini, after meeting his client in Milan's Opera prison, where he was moved due to its better health facilities compared to his original jail in Sassari.
"The situation is becoming extremely complicated and he is going beyond the critical threshold.
"He is absolutely determined to go on but is aware that this will lead to irreparable consequences." Rossi Albertini added that Cospito's writings and books had been taken from him.
"A very peculiar thing happened: Alfredo Cospito had prepared a paper to be sent to the authorities who can receive them to guard against torture, against inhuman and degrading treatment.
This paper contained in a notepad was taken from him, withheld, confiscated by the new institute in Opera. They have also taken away his books from the Bancali prison and so he has nothing left to read, let alone write".
Cospito, 55, is campaigning to get the 41 bis, which has hitherto been reserved for Mafia bosses, scrapped for everyone.
International rights groups have said the regime, which mandates almost complete isolation form the outside world, could amount to inhumane treatment and does not fulfill requirements for rehabilitation. (ANSA).
