'Retaliation for Damascus may trigger widespread conflict'

(ANSA) - ROME, APR 12 - Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani spoke on the phone with Iranian counterpart Hossein Amir-Ambdollahian against the backdrop of renewed tensions in the Middle East after the attack on Tehran's consulate in Damascus, calling for restraint in Tehran's response against Israel to the slaying of pasdaran leaders.
In the conversation, Tajani reportedly made a "strong appeal" for restraint to Iran, stressing that retaliation against Israel would provoke a counter-reaction from the Jewish state.
And this could trigger an even wider and more dangerous conflict for all states in the region.
Italy calls on Iran to work in the opposite direction to reduce tension and return to political discussions, sources at the foreign ministry said.
Tajani is also deputy premier as well as leader of the centre-right post Berlusconi Forza Italia (FI) party, the third part of Premier Giorgia Meloni's colaition government along with her rightwing Brothers of Italy (FdI) party and Deputy Premier and Transport Minister Matteo Salvini's rightwing League party.
