If Russia turns off gas, rationing from Jan says think tank

(ANSA) - ROME, SEP 2 - If Russia turns off gas to Italy there will be rationing from January, a top Italian think tank said Friday.
    "If Russia turned off the gas tap today, with stocks at 83%, at the start of January we will be forced to ration consumption," Davide Tabarelli, president of Nomisma Energia, told ANSA.
    "But it would be a good thing to start even earlier, so as not to have to heavily cut gas in the coldest months," he said.
    "This winter we still won't have the two new regassification terminals at Piombino and Ravenna, if things go well they will arrive in May.
    "We have increased non-Russian imports, around 17 billion cubic metres more, but that's not enough to replace the 29 billion we used to buy from Moscow".

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said Friday it was time for a price cap on Russian gas, as Italy has been calling for for months.
Russian President Dmitry Medvedev told TASS that "there won't be Russian gas in Europe any more" if a price cap is introduced.
"It will be like petrol, there simply won't be any more Russian gas in Europe," he said.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told the Russian news agency earlier that "if hostile countries place a ceiling on the prices of Russian energy resources, Moscow will only supply oil to the countries that meet market conditions".
G7 finance ministers on Friday approved cap on Russian oil prices.
