Gorbachev's message of peace still valid says Draghi

(ANSA) - ROME, AUG 31 - Italian Premier Mario Draghi on Wednesday paid tribute to Mikhail Gorbachev after the last leader of the Soviet Union died at the age of 91 on Tuesday, saying his message of peace was still valid today.
    "Mikhail Gorbachev made a mark on the recent history of Russia, Europe and the world," Draghi said.
    "After a life in the Communist Party, with courage and determination he ended the experience of the Soviet Union and tried to construct a new season of transparency, rights and freedom.
    "His desire for peace and his opposition to an imperialistic vision of Russia earned him the Nobel Prize (for Peace).
    "These messages are more relevant today than ever when faced with the tragic invasion of Ukraine".
    Italian President Sergio Mattarella also hailed Gorbachev's legacy.
    "A figure who made a profound mark on European history and on the global balance of power of the last part of the 20th century has passed," the Italian head of State said.
    "The debt owed to him, especially by Europeans, is great".
