(ANSA) - Rome, February 12 - Envoys from Venezuelan opposition leader and self-proclaimed interim president Juan Guaidò on Tuesday thanked Italy for its request that fresh elections be held as soon as possible after July's allegedly rigged ballot.
"We thank the Italian people, the parliament, President (Sergio) Mattarella and (Foreign) Minister (Enzo) Moavero (Milanesi) for their support for the demand for presidential elections as soon as possible and the recognition of the national assembly as sole legitimate organ in Venezuela," said one of the envoys, Francisco Sucre, at the foreign press club in Rome.
"This support is (a source of) strength for our people's struggle, to restore democracy".
Sucre is the chair of the Venezuelan parliament's foreign affairs committee.
Rodrigo Diamanti, another of Guaidò's envoys, told the press club that "all Italian political forces, except one, have told us that Guaidò is the interim president of Venezuela. "We need all of Italy, all the people and all the government to support the transition, we have suffered too much.
"Neutrality cannot become indifference," he said.
