No deal on 5-yr glyphosate OK renewal (2)

EC to appeal case

Redazione Ansa

(ANSA) - Brussels, November 9 - European Union member States on Thursday failed to agree on renewing the license of the controversial herbicide glyphosate for five years. Fourteen countries voted in favour, nine including Italy against, and five including Germany abstained. The European Commission intends to appeal the case on November 27 or 28. If there is not agreement then, rules say the EC can approve the license renewal without the OK from member States. Italian farmers association Coldiretti said imports of the herbicide should be stopped pending the EU verdict. Italy has already banned its use in areas frequented by the public and by vulnerable groups, including parks, gardens, sports fields and green areas inside schools and health facilities.
