Ingroia slams handling of Regeni case

'Expecting collaboration from Egypt a tragic mistake' - Ingroia

(ANSA) - Rome, August 23 - Former anti-mafia judge and founder and current head of the Civil Action party Antonio Ingroia on Tuesday criticized the way that the Italian government was handling a case involving the murder of a young researcher in Egypt. "There is still no truth, no justice for Giulio Regeni," the Italian Cambridge University graduate who was abducted and tortured to death in Egypt earlier this year, he said, criticizing the "latest provocation from Egyptian president Al-Sisi amid the unacceptable silence of the Italian government." He added that "it should be clear by now that a totalitarian state like Egypt, which stomps on all rights, will never agree to put itself on trial and so expecting collaboration has always been and continues to be a tragic mistake. I have said this before and I will say it again: the only thing to be done is to call on the UN to request that an international commission shed light on the case."
