US and Cuba to reopen embassies

Paves way to possible end of trade embargo

Redazione Ansa

(ANSA) - New York, July 1 - US President Barack Obama and Cuban President Raul Castro are expected to announce Wednesday the reopening of embassies in their respective countries, re-establishing formal diplomatic relations for the first time in over 50 years, US government sources said.
US-Cuban relations have continued to thaw in recent months, especially after the US announcement in May that it was removing Cuba from its "black list" of state sponsors of terrorism.
Wednesday's announcement is expected to bring the US closer to a possible lifting of the trade embargo against Cuba that has been in place since 1960, a move that would require the approval of the US Congress.
