(ANSA) - ROME, MAR 23 - The Italian Bishops Conference (CEI)
said Thursday that the February 26 migrant-boat shipwreck off
the Calabrian town of Cutro, in which at least 87 people died,
has highlighted weakness in the policies adopted to manage the
arrival of refugees and migrants.
"The Cutro tragedy is a open wound which shows the weakness of
the responses enacted," the CEI said.
"Limiting oneself to closing, controlling and turning people
back not only fails to offer broad solutions, but it also
contributes to feeding illegal conduct.
"Far-sighted European and national policies are needed to manage
entry flows via legal channels, which means safe paths that
avoid dangerous sea voyages". (ANSA).
