(ANSA) - Rome, October 22 - Pope Francis congratulated Bayern Munich on their 7-1 mauling of AS Roma in the Champions League during a private audience with the German champions on Wednesday. "You played a wonderful game yesterday," Bayern quoted Francis as telling the players after their victory at Rome's Stadio Olimpico on Tuesday. The Pope, a big football fan and card-carrying member of Buenos Aires side San Lorenzo, added that he was surprised about how big the win had been, the German side said on their website.
Despite the humiliating defeat, Roma still have a good chance of qualifying from Champions League Group E to make the knockout stage of Europe's premier club competition.
Roma are second in the group with four points from three games, two points more than English champions Manchester City, who drew 2-2 at bottom side CSKA Moscow on Tuesday.
Bayern lead the group with nine points after winning all their games so far. http://popefrancisnewsapp.com/
