(ANSA) - ROME, JUN 6 - Soccer great and club legend Paolo Maldini has left his role as AC Milan technical director due to differences with the club's management over the project for the coming season, the Milanese club officially announced Tuesday after days of speculation.
Another former player turned executive, Director of Sport Frederic Massara, is also set to leave the seven-time European champions, sources said earlier.
After winning Serie A in the 2021-2022 season, the campaign that has just ended was largely a disappointment for Milan.
Their title defence was effectively over by Christmas, they had to settle for a fourth-place finish, and they were well beaten by city rivals Inter in the Champions League semi-final.
The Rossoneri issued a statement Tuesday saying "AC Milan announces that Paolo Maldini has ended his tenure at the club, with effect from 5 June 2023.
"We thank him for his contribution over these years," read the note released by the club, "with Milan's return to the Champions League and winning the Scudetto in the 2021/22 season.
"His responsibilities will be assigned to an integrated team that will operate in close contact with the first team coach, reporting directly to the CEO." (ANSA).
