(ANSA) - ROME, APR 1 - Veteran Italian golfer Costantino Rocca, who came second in the British Masters in 1995, put on a great show in Bergamo Saturday along with 3,000 other enthusiasts in the second event on the Road to Rome's Ryder Cup 2023, Golf In Piazza.
Six months out from the Europe-USA clash at the Marco Simone Golf & Country Club outside the Italian capital, the fans competed in the centre of the northern Italian city.
A Bergamasco born and bred, 66-year-old Rocca was the first Italian to take part in a Ryder Cup, in 1993, when he scored a hole in one.
In 1997 he beat Tiger Woods, fresh from his rampant first Masters win, in the singles.
Rocca was visibly enthused by the arrival of the Ryder Cup trophy in his home town.
As for this year's event on September 29-October 1 in Rome, Rocca said "I expect a great show, in the most beautiful country in the world and in a unique city like Rome. I hope there is at least one Italian player in Team Europe. And I hope Tiger Woods makes it to Rome, he's an infinite champion".
2018 Open winner Francesco 'Chicco' Molinari and the current Italian number one Guido Migliozzi are hoping to be picked for the European team, with Molinari hoping to replicate his brilliant performance the last time the tournament was played in Europe, in Paris in 2018, when he became the first European to win five points from five matches.
