(ANSA) - ROME, FEB 8 - Italy's Marta Bassino won the SuperG at the skiing world championships in France Wednesday, grabbing Italy's second gold after Federica Brignone in the combined two days ago.
Bassino clocked 1.28.06 to beat into second place American superstar Mikaela Shiffrin (1.28.17), who had looked like bagging the combined before straddling the last slalom gate on Monday.
Austria's Cornelia Huetter took the bronze in 1.28.39.
Brignone came eighth while it was a disappointing 11th place finish for Sofia Goggi, one of the pre-race favourites after winning four of the six World Cup downhill races so far this season, despite her breaking two fingers in St Moritz in December.
Bassino said she was overjoyed at doing something "incredible".
She told Rai TV: "Today I just thought of skiing like I know, in the end what makes the difference is pushing in all the bends and that's what I thought to do, I'm super happy.
"It's something strong, incredible, I'm really pleased with myself, I'm happy. It's a joy, crowning hard work, tenacity and consistency". (ANSA).
