Soccer: Avellino fans strip player after play-off defeat

(ANSA) - ROME, MAY 23 - Ultra fans of third-tier club Avellino stripped a young player to his underwear while he was returning home from a 2-1 Serie C play-off on May 4, police said after citing the alleged culprits Monday.
    the player, 22-year-old Romanian midfielder Claudiu Micovschi, was grabbed, threatened with death and stripped of his tracksuit by the fans after the 2-1 home defeat to Foggia wrecked Avellino's slim chances of promotion to Serie B.
    The ultras said his performance meant he was "unworthy to wear our team's colours", police said.
    They have been cited for aggravated theft (of the tracksuit), violence and threats. (ANSA).
