Soccer: Time to hand over Milan reins (2)

Says Totti contract renewal 'right thing to do'

(ANSA) - Rome, May 27 - Ex-premier and media mogul Silvio Berlusconi said Friday the time has come for him to hand over the reins of his Milan football team. "After 30 years the time has come for me to hand over the reins, but I want to leave Milan in the hands of those who can take it to center stage in Italy and the world and who can put money into the team every year," Berlusconi said.
Berlusconi's family holding company Fininvest said earlier in the month it will enter into exclusive talks with a Chinese consortium about the possible sale of a stake in AC Milan.
Asked what he thought of Roma striker Francesco Totti's contract renewal, Berlusconi said "it's the right thing for the club to give him a shot at another season. And then it will be the right thing to keep him on as manager".
AS Roma Sporting Director Walter Sabatini said earlier in the month that club legend Totti is set to get his wish and have his contract renewed by one year.
Roma's American owners were reportedly reluctant to extend the deal of the former Italy forward given his age - he turns 40 in September.
