(ANSA) - Florence, May 24 - Italy coach Antonio Conte told
reporters on Tuesday that he had few doubts about his Euro 2016
squad as a preliminary group of 30 players gathered for the
Azzurri's pre-tournament training camp near Florence.
Conte is set to cut the squad to 23 players in a week's
time after Sunday's friendly against Scotland in Malta.
"I selected the squad with my head, trying to pick the
best players, on the basis of my beliefs and what we have done
over the last two years," Conte told a news conference.
"At the moment we have 30 players and they need to be
trimmed down. We got to this number due to injuries and choices.
"I have few doubts in my head. I have a precise design and
over the week we'll work and assess the condition of the injured
players," he said referring to midfielders Thiago Motta and
Riccardo Montolivo, whose presence in France is in doubt.
Conte's preparations have been hit by injuries that ruled
out Juventus midfielder Claudio Marchisio and Paris
Saint-Germain playmaker Marco Verratti.
His men will have their final pre-tournament friendly
against Finland in Verona on June 6 before taking off for their
Euro 2016 base at Montpellier two days later.
Italy play Belgium, Ireland and Sweden in the group stage
of the Euros in France.
