UEFA set to OK goal-line technology

Opinion of referees crucial, says UEFA referee chief

(ANSA) - Rome, January 19 - UEFA's chief refereeing officer Pierluigi Collina said Tuesday that European soccer's governing body is set to approve the use of goal-line technology (GLT) at a meeting of its executive on Friday after the match officials gave their blessing.
GLT is used in situations when it is difficult to tell whether the ball has crossed the line and a goal should be awarded. Italy's top flight, Serie A, has used it this season and it has helped get some tough calls right.
"Over a year ago, (UEFA Chief Michel) Platini proposed the possibility of using goal-line technology alongside the referee assistants, while considering the opinion of the referees' committee," said Collina.
"We are confident that the executive will take the decision now, with Euro 2016 coming, we think it's a good opportunity to introduce it at an important tournament". GLT could then be used in the Champions League and the Europa League next season.
