Move needed for security, says D'Angelo

(ANSA) - Rome, July 28 - Rome police chief Nicolò D'Angelo on Monday confirmed that the capacity of the two 'curve' end stands of the city's Stadio Olimpico will be cut for security reasons.
The Curva Nord and Curva Sud respectively play host to the hard-core ultra fans of Serie A teams Lazio and AS Roma. Soccer matches at the Stadio Olimpico have frequently been marred by violence in recent years, especially derby clashes between Roma and Lazio. D'Angelo said the capacity of the two 'curve' will be cut from 8,700 to 7,500 to allow for these sections to be split in two with the creation of a central corridor. The move has met a frosty reception from the clubs, who will see ticket revenues fall, and from fans. "The situation of the 'curve'in the Stadio Olimpico is unacceptable," D'Angelo said. "It puts the safety of the spectators at risk. Our aim is to enable everyone to watch the match in safety. A better distribution of the fans is necessary".
