(ANSA) - Rome, May 26 - Owner Silvio Berlusconi said Tuesday that he was hopeful Carlo Ancelotti will return to AC Milan after being sacked as Real Madrid coach on Monday.
Milan CEO Adriano Galliani is in Madrid to try to convince Ancelotti to return, but the 55-year-old has said he wants to take a one-year sabbatical because he needs neck surgery. "I hope Galliani, who is very close to Ancelotti thanks to a relationship of mutual esteem, can convince him to come back to make Milan great again," three-time premier Berlusconi told Radio Capital.
"Galliani and I are optimistic". Milan's current coach, Filippo Inzaghi, looks set to be dismissed in the closed season with the seven-time European champions lying a lowly 10th in Serie A with one game to go. Ancelotti won two Champions League titles, a Club World Cup, a Serie A crown and an Italian Cup during his 2001-2009 stint as Milan coach.
He went on to win English and French league titles with Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain and he won the Champions League for the third time as a coach with Real last season.
Real dismissed him Monday as they ended this season trophy-less.
