(ANSA) - Rome, February 19 - The number of transplant
operations performed in Italy in 2014 rose by 135 to 2,976 over
the previous year, health authorities said Thursday.
The lion's share involved kidney transplants, which
accounted for 1,586 operations.
This was 85 more than in 2013.
Liver transplants accounted for 1,056 operations (+58),
heart transplants for 226 (+7) and lung transplants 126 (-15).
Skin, bone, cornea and stem cell transplants all increased
in 2014 with respect to the year before.
As of December 31, 2014 there were 8,758 people awaiting a
transplant.
The vast majority - 6,538 - were waiting for a kidney.
