Italian Ebola sufferer's condition improves

Emergency doctor not out of danger yet

(ANSA) - Rome, November 28 - The condition of the Italian doctor who contracted Ebola is Sierra Leone has improved, Rome's Spallanzani Institute said on Friday. "His general condition has improved and he says that he feels better," read a Spallanzani medical bulletin. "His body temperature is currently below 38 degrees and the vital signs are normal at the moment. The patient is vigilant and cooperative". Nicola Petrosillo, the coordinator of the team that is treating the 50-year-old doctor, said it would not be possible to say he is out of danger for some days yet. "He is responding positively, but we are still in a phase in which we must assess things," Petrosillo told State broadcaster RAI. The patient, who got the deadly virus while working for the medical-aid NGO Emergency, is being treated with a experimental therapy that uses plasma from a convalescent, the Spallanzani said. He started the therapy on Wednesday after returning from Africa on Tuesday. The Spallanzani said that the plasma arrived from Spain "thanks to a chain of support and solidarity from the institutions, the scientific community, the pharmaceutical companies and the transport firms".
