(ANSA) - ROME, MAR 7 - Former Sicily governor Raffaele
Lombardo was definitively cleared of Mafia charges on Tuesday.
The supreme Court of Cassation rejected an appeal by Catania
prosecutors against a January 2022 acquittal on charges of
external complicity in mafia association and vote buying.
Catania-born Lombardo, 72, was acquitted by the high court with
the fullest formula possible, "because the crime was not
committed".
The Cassation prosecutor general had requested the acquittal of
Lombardo on the charges of helping Cosa Nostra.
Lombardo is also a former president of the Sicilian regional
parliament.
Lombardo was originally sentenced to six years and eight month
in the case in 2014. (ANSA).
