(see related stories) (ANSA) - ROME, OCT 21 - German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and French President Emmanuel Macron both said they were ready to work with a new Italian government headed by Brothers of Italy (FdI) leader Giorgia Meloni at the end of the European Council in Brussels.
"We are all together as European nations within the EU and it is essential that we democracies cooperate a great deal," said Scholz.
"Every time that there is a change of government because of elections, as (happens) in a democracy, it cannot change the good relations that we have with the other member States or, for example, that we have between Germany and Italy.
"We will continue to work with very good cooperation between the countries and within the sphere of the European Union".
    Macron echoed those sentiments.
"I am ready to work with Meloni," he said.
"I will meet her around the table of the European Council".
The French president is visiting Rome on Sunday and Monday to meet Italian President Sergio Mattarella and Pope Francis.
He did not say whether he would have talks with Meloni, who may have been sworn in as premier by them.
"I want to respect the procedures," he said. (ANSA).
