No veto on Salvini getting interior ministry says League

'Excellent work as interior minister not in discussion'

(ANSA) - ROME, OCT 7 - There is no veto on League leader Matteo Salvini returning to the interior ministry as part of Giorgia Meloni's probable next government despite his controversial record there in 2018-2019, League sources said Friday.
In his previous stint as interior minister Salvini distinguished himself by a policy of denying port access to NGO-run migrant rescue ships, a policy which led to more than one 'kidnapping' trial.
He is reportedly eager to get back to pursuing that policy amid a rise in migrant arrivals in Italy, but his bargaining power has been reduced by the League's relatively poor showing in the general election compared to its chief ally, Meloni's Brothers of Italy (FdI).
There have also been reports of a veto which would prevent Meloni naming him to the ministry in her new cabinet.
Italia media have said he might get the agriculture ministry instead, as well as becoming deputy premier again.
The League sources said Friday: "There are no vetoes of any kind on Matteo Salvini, whose excellent work at the interior ministry is not in discussion". (ANSA).
