League requests new ministry for family, birth rate

Build on policies in Alto Adige, region with highest birth rate

(ANSA) - ROME, OCT 7 - The League party has requested a new ministry for the family and birth rate in Giorgia Meloni's probable next government, leader Matteo Salvini told militants at Saronno Thursday night, Senate Whip Massimiliano Romeo confirmed to ANSA Friday.
Brothers of Italy (FdI) leader Meloni ran on a pledge to boost Italy's birth rate, which at around 1.2 children per woman is among the world's lowest, and the League has supported that vow.
Romeo said the League hoped to build on proposals it has filed in previous parliamentary terms and follow the example of the pro-family policies of the region with the highest birth rate, Alto Adige.
Italy's demographic crisis is often blamed on a lack of job security and affordable child care. Pensions eat up most of Italy's welfare spending and most new jobs are on temporary contracts that offer no financial stability.
The country's population is getting older and older. (ANSA).
