(ANSA) - ROME, SEP 27 - Italy gains when it works with and not against the EU, European Commissioner for Promoting the European Way of Life Margaritis Schinas told Spanish radio in an interview on Rome's new far-right-led government on Tuesday.
"All governments, including the Italian one, wil have much more to gain in working with Europe and not against Europe," Schinas told RNE in answering a question about the Brothers of Italy (FdI) led coalition set to give Italy its first female premier in Giorgia Meloni.
FdI snd its fellow far-right ally the League have both expressed euroskeptic views in the past and Meloni recently said the "fun's over" for the EU with a new rightist Italian government also including the pro-Europe Forza Italia (FI) of ex-premier Silvio Berlusconi.
"No (Italian) electoral result can break European unity," said Schinas, who is also a European Commission Vice President.
On Meloni's 'fun's over' remark in the electoral campaign, he replied: "We'll have to see if she does what she said in reality or not".
Meloni is friends with Hungary's Viktor Orban and allies in the European Conservatives and Reformists party with Poland's Law and Justice party, both of whom have crossed swords with the EU over rule of law and human rights issues. (ANSA).
