(ANSA) - ROME, MAY 11 - Italian Interior Minister Luciana Lamorgese on Tuesday called on the EU to find a long-term structural solution on how to manage asylum seekers after thousands arrived on the southern Italian island of Lampedusa in recent days.
Earlier on Thursday a European Commission spokesperson said that, so far, there had been no firm commitments from member States for the relocation of these asylum seekers.
"It is necessary to carry out structural interventions in the system of managing the phenomenon inside the the European Union with the activation of concrete, solid solidarity mechanisms...
as well as a shared strategy to fight the trafficking of human beings and illegal immigration," Lamorgese told a Lisbon conference organized by the Portuguese duty presidency of the EU. (ANSA).
