Plan to use army to fix Rome potholes

Govt set to rejig measure after budget committee rejection

Redazione Ansa

(ANSA) - Rome, December 18 - A Senate committee has rejected an amendment to the budget law that sets aside money to fix potholes in Rome with the help of the army.
Deputy Economy Minister Laura Castelli said the measure would be adjusted and presented again.
Mayor Virginia Raggi said the plan was a "great victory for Rome and the Romans".
However, Giorgio Meloni, the leader of the rightwing Brothers of Italy (FdI) party, said the need to bring in the army showed the "incapacity" of Raggi's 5-Star Movement (M5S) administration.
Defence Minister Elisabetta Trenta said the army would only intervene in emergency situations in which holes were a danger.
