(ANSA) - Rome, December 7 - President Sergio Mattarella said Friday that Italy must not allow people to be excluded from society and called for an end to violence and hate speech.
"There can be no castoffs in society, only citizens of identical rank and equal social importance," the head of State said in his address for an event marking the 50th anniversary of the Pope John XXIII Community. "A different vision (to this) would throw into doubt the fundamentals of our republic".
The president also called on people to "honour the word equality written in our Constitution" and "banish definitively physical and verbal violence, hatred, intolerance and discrimination".
"We must not be afraid or ashamed to show good sentiments".
