Don't want crisis with Rome - Moscovici

Italy set to reply to letter of reproach over budget plans

Redazione Ansa

(ANSA) - Rome, October 22 - Brussels does not want a crisis in relations with Rome over the Italian government's budget plans, European Economic Affairs Commissioner Pierre Moscovici has said. "The European Commission does not want a crisis between Brussels and Rome," Moscovici said in an interview with France Inter, with the Italian government set to reply on Monday to the Commission's letter of reproach over the budget for 2019 and the plan to let the deficit rise to 2.4% of GDP next year.
"The European Commission thinks that Italy's place is at the centre of the eurozone, not outside".
Moscovici said that "Italy can have its own budget policy, but within the rules". "The risk is that it (the budget) does not revive growth, as there is little investment in this policy, which, instead, buries it," he continued. "Who will pay the debt. The future generations, the Italian people will pay.
"That's why a budget that increases debt is not for the people".
