(ANSA) - Cairo, September 17 - Lower House Speaker Roberto
Fico said Monday that he had talks in Cairo with Egyptian
President Abdel Fattah Khalil el-Sisi about the torture and
murder of Italian student Giulio Regeni.
"There was only one item on the agenda of my meeting with the
president and that was the question of Giulio Regeni," Fico
said.
"I came because we have reached a stall".
Regeni, who was researching Cairo street hawker unions for
his Cambridge University, is suspected by Italian prosecutors to
have been killed in early 2016 by elements in the Egyptian
security apparatus - a charge Egypt rejects.
"I think my message in coming here is clear," Fico said.
"Cooperation, stabilization of the area and of Libya are all
undoubtedly important but we want steps forward on the Giulio
Regeni case rapidly, not in biblical periods of time".
