House approves security decree (2)

Measures include greater powers for mayors

(ANSA) - Rome, March 16 - The Lower House on Thursday approved the government's decree to boost "integrated security".
The package moves to the Senate after getting the green light with 230 votes in favour and 50 against. Lawmakers for the anti-establishment 5-Star Movement (M5S) abstained. The decree allocates extra-spending for security and urban renewal, starting 1.9 billion euros this year, and gradually going up to 3.5 billion in 2019, and then three billion a year from 2020.
It also boosts the powers of mayors over security and gives the greater scope to issue restrictions on the sale of alcohol when this is deemed necessary. The package makes it possible to ban drug dealers from the areas in which they operate and makes it easier to punish people who illegally demand money for helping motorists park their cars.
