Renzi was good premier says Moscovici (2)

Commissioner has 'faith' in Italian authorities

Redazione Ansa

(ANSA) - Brussels, December 5 - European Economic Affairs Commissioner Pierre Moscovici said Monday that he was "struck" by the outcome of Italy's Constitutional referendum, while adding that he did not see it causing a crisis for the EU. He also said that he thought Matteo Renzi had been a "good premier who conducted important social and economic reforms".
"We have faith in the Italian authorities," he added. "It's a solid country that we can count on... It's not a psychodrama. It's a domestic Italian political affair with important consequences for Italy, but it won't become a European crisis".
He added that he did not think that the Commission's criticism of Italy's 2017 budget had been a factor in the No vote's win. "We have always been understanding of the fact that Italy faced the issues of migrants and the earthquake," he said. "I don't think (our position) played a role. It isn't an anti-EU vote".
